The 2018 edition of Shark Week comes at an time in the UAE, when The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment has introduced The National Plan of Action for the Conservation and Management of Sharks 2018-2021, as well as releasing the UAE Shark Assessment Report, which seeks to save dozens of shark and ray species from the brink of extinction as part of an initial four-year plan.
For the very first time, Shark Week brings together two franchises on television in a shark vs. shark matchup to create Shark Tank Meets Shark Week with a $50,000 donation on the line for a shark-saving cause. Barbara Corcoran, Mark Cuban, Daymond John, and Kevin OLeary get out of the tank and into the water, the release states. The Sharks are each paired with an oceanic organisation to uncover the issues theyre facing and theyll discover threats of habitat destruction, overfishing, bycatch and more.
Back on Discovery for the 30th anniversary of Shark Week, Bear Grylls goes head to head with sharks with ‘home field advantage’.It is billed as his greatest test of wits and skill as the ultimate survivor facing off with the oceans apex predator: Bear versus Shark.
Other highlights include Uncaged: Shark vs Ronda Rousey. Olympian, MMA champion and current WWE Superstar Ronda Rousey is trained by shark conservationist and shark attack survivor, Paul de Gelder, to face her fiercest opponent yet: the fastest, bitiest shark in the world, and the ultimate fighter of the sea, the Mako shark.
Discovery will also air Air Jaws: The Hunted. In 2017, five full grown Great White sharks washed up dead on beaches in South Africa. The necropsy revealed they were eaten alive. Leading the case is Shark Biologist Alison Towner, searching for the killers.
Across the 30th anniversary showcase, Discovery Channel is working with two dozen marine biologists and science institutions to bring shark research technology and insights on some of the most unique shark species in the world.
This year, Oceana and Discovery are teaming up to help protect vulnerable hammerhead sharks, which are threatened by a global shark fin trade that includes fins from as many as 73 million sharks each year.
